The nougat of Montélimar holds a special place in the hearts of Montiliens, especially as it has become a historical tradition in the region of Drôme. It is a white paste composed mainly of sugar, egg white, almonds, and honey, sometimes complemented with pistachio or vanilla as a flavoring. Its texture is the perfect mix between crunchy and soft and can take different shapes: small individual candies, bigger bars to share, or small pieces to decorate desserts.
The Drôme region has been the French specialist when it comes to growing almonds for centuries now. Almond trees started to be developed around the city of Montélimar in the 16th century. With the main component of this specialty being almonds and favorable climatic conditions in the region, Montélimar has all the keys to being the expert of nougat. Moreover, we can trace the first written mention, in the city archives, about the “nougat de Montélimar” dating back to 1701.
Manufacturing techniques of nougat were then transmitted from generation to generation, especially with the help of nougatiers (artisans who make nougat), and it became a big part of the local culture. Montélimar, located along the highway and the road “Nationale 7” that connects the north to the south of France, was the perfect place for travelers to take a break and eat this unique confection, which helped make the treat nationally famous.
After eight years of waiting, the 13 producers of nougat in Montélimar finally got, in 2024, recognition through the Protected Geographical Indication (PGI). What does it mean? Granted by the European Commission, PGI protects the unique and qualitative recipe of the nougat made in the region of Montélimar, making it illegal for other producers to sell similar sweets under the same name and helps prevent fraud.
Children love it; the taste and the smell of nougat remind adults of their childhood. This authentic treat makes everyone happy! So, what are you waiting for? Try the famous nougat de Montélimar, which locals have put so much effort into protecting.
